Why are supermarkets cheaper?

Supermarket fuel stations (Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Costco) use fuel as a loss-leader to attract customers into their stores. Their buying power and willingness to accept lower margins means they consistently undercut branded forecourts.

The fuel itself meets the same British Standards as branded fuel. The main difference is that premium branded fuels (e.g. Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate) contain proprietary additive packages — but the standard grades (E10, B7) are functionally equivalent regardless of where you buy them.
