Why are motorway fuel prices higher?

Motorway service stations typically charge a significant premium over off-motorway forecourts. This is due to higher operating costs (land rent to Highways England, 24/7 staffing requirements) and the captive audience of drivers who need fuel but cannot easily leave the motorway.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has previously investigated motorway fuel pricing. While the premium is legal, drivers can often save significantly by planning fuel stops at off-motorway stations near junctions.

Avoid the motorway premium

Fuelsy shows you the cheapest stations near motorway junctions — so you can fill up for less without going far off-route.
